Transplantation Tales, QUB
On Thursday 20th February, our KS5 Organ Donation Module pupils were treated to a superb day of learning at Transplantation Tales in QUB Whitla Hall, organised by Dr Clare McKeaveney and colleagues in the School of Nursing and Midwifery. This was part of the NI Science Festival.
Transplantation Tales.
Pupils were given presentations by clinicians and experts from the transplant field which included a transplant surgeon, a paediatric renal consultant, a paediatric renal transplant nurse, lab scientists who do the tissue typing and matching, a research fellow speciaising in genetics and kidney disease, a clinical psychologist, a renal dietician and PHA (Public Healthy Agency). Local kidney charities NIKRF and NIKPA were also in attendance. The experts circulated throughout the Whitla Hall, speaking to each of the teams, answering their many questions and giving them a real insight into the many varied careers involved in transplantation and the reality of kidney disease.
The pupils had to create a story board for a 2-minute animated video about kidney disease and kidney transplantation. To assist them, they were given a lesson by Laura Evans-Hill, Nifty Fox Creative, on how to get their message across in their drawing. Laura live animated the event which was fascinating for the pupils to see.
The teams got to work on coming up with ideas, using the resources and materials about kidney disease and transplantation to inform their planning. There was a real buzz in the room as the groups worked to develop their ideas. After a lovely lunch, pupils finished their storyboard while the judges circulated.
20 Aquinas pupils took part in 3 teams and it was fantastic to see how well they worked together and how they came up with such creative concepts. One of the Aquinas teams was chosen as the overall winner and each of the team went home with a £15 Amazon voucher. The judges really liked the "Transport to Transplant" concept and the metaphor of being on the train journey to prepare for transplantation. The winning storyboard was also illustrated on the screen by Laura to complete a fantastic day. Well done to Gemma Jordan, Mary Lawn, Isabella White, Meabh Grant, Megan Magee and Sophia Little!
